Nanotecnologia e meio ambiente para uma sociedade sustentável

This paper has seven topics that discuss the relationship between Nanotechnology and Environment to build a Sustainable Society. In a glance is showed what is nanotechnology and its recent history (topics 1 and 2). In continuity is presented the theoretical bases to understand the relationship between environment and technological opportunities. The topic4 introduce nanotechnology in the reflection about environment and technological opportunities. Nanotechnology and Sustainable is discussed in the topic 5. After theses previews topic are presented the preliminary conclusions and suggestions to the theoretical reflections

Os primórdios do cinema documental

A importância dos documentários como fonte de conhecimento histórico tem sido cada vez mais destacada por inúmeros autores, em especial Marc Ferro. Logo no início do cinema, com os irmãos Lumière, podemos observar como os seus filmes registaram para a posteridade momentos da vida, como a saída dos operários de uma fábrica, ou a coroação de Nicolau II, permitindo-nos aceder ao conhecimento de uma realidade que para sempre ficaria imortalizada nessas imagens. O processo parecia simples: uma câmara fixa captava as imagens daquilo que decorria à sua frente. Assim, estes filmes tornam-se fontes primárias do conhecimento histórico, pois podemos analisar aquilo que elas dão a ver. Mas, para além disso, essas imagens são também fontes secundárias, visto permitirem uma análise mais detalhada da maneira como captaram a realidade, o que pretendiam mostrar e o modo como nos levam a essa mesma realidade

Respect for privacy begins when gathering information

The news treatment of issues at risk of invading the private sphere calls for an evaluation of the underlying public interest. The exercise of balancing values - right to information and right to privacy – occurs not only at the time of information transmission; it must be observed since the process of collecting, in order to reduce the damage caused. This article raises questions such as contact with citizens, including children, the conduct of journalists in trauma situations, voluntary exposure of privacy by public or anonymous figures, as well as hearing people under charges and the use of unconventional research methods, which may cause privacy violations. Taking closely into account the standards set in ethical instruments, this reflection covers specific cases

Orbit Representations from Linear mod 1 Transformations

We show that every point $x_0\in [0,1]$ carries a representation of a $C^*$-algebra that encodes the orbit structure of the linear mod 1 interval map $f_{\beta,\alpha}(x)=\beta x +\alpha$. Such $C^*$-algebra is generated by partial isometries arising from the subintervals of monotonicity of the underlying map $f_{\beta,\alpha}$. Then we prove that such representation is irreducible. Moreover two such of representations are unitarily equivalent if and only if the points belong to the same generalized orbit, for every $\alpha\in [0,1[$ and $\beta\geq 1$
